Balloon tips don't work

Cause

If you can't see the balloon hints when a friend logs in or off, there can be several causes for it. Check the Requirements section to see what is required for them to work.

Requirements

Balloon tips require following things:

• Windows XP or newer
• Balloon tips enabled in Xfire's options
• Balloon tips enabled in your Windows user profile

Enabling in Windows account

If the balloon tips do not work at all in your Windows XP, it might be that they are completely disabled for your user account. Here are instructions to force them to be enabled using registry editor:

Beware, doing unwanted changes to registry might make your system unusable, follow the steps carefully.

There are also programs that let you do this kind of tweaks easier and safer, but regedit can be found from virtually every Windows installation.

1. Start Registry editor (Start -> Run... -> regedit.exe)
2. On the left side you should see a folder type view, navigate to this key:

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3. On the right side should be an item named as "EnableBalloonTips", and its value is 0 (zero). If there isn't, then don't proceed; the problem is not here.
4. Click on "EnableBalloonTips" and press Delete. Confirm that you want to delete the item. Do not delete anything else than this particular item!
5. Restart computer.

If you did the steps correctly, the balloon tips should be enabled to your Windows user account again.
